O'Sensei Tatsuo Shimabuku

Boonton Karate-Do Kai teaches Isshin-ryu, a style of karate introduced in Okinawa by Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1954.

While Isshin-ryu is a relatively young style, it is important to realize that it is firmly rooted in traditional Okinawan karate. Master Shimabuku was acknowledged as one of the most accomplished practitioners of the traditional styles. He studied for almost four decades with the best masters of his time: Shorin-ryu under Chotoku Kyan and Chokoi Motobu; Goju-ryu under Chojun Miyagi; weapons under Taira Shinken.

Over time, he selected what he considered to be the best components of each of these systems and evolved them into his own style, Isshin-ryu.

Isshin-ryu, which means "One Heart Way" or "One Mind Way," is a very practical style. It favors a quick, close-in approach to fighting instead of flashy techniques. It is characterized by natural stances, limiting wasted motion and maintaining speed and stability.
